Ele pertence.
A questão é quem será capaz de tirá-lo do topo.
McLaughlin dominates Laguna Seca, Palou claims fifth IndyCar title and Dixon says goodbye
The 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season came to a spectacular conclusion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. In a race defined by pace, strategy and very few interruptions, Scott McLaughlin returned to the top step of the podium, Álex Palou secured another championship, and Scott Dixon closed one of the most important chapters of his career.
Starting from pole position, McLaughlin controlled almost the entire race. The Team Penske driver led 87 of the 95 laps and claimed his first victory since Milwaukee in 2024, ending a nearly two-year winless streak.
But while the New Zealander dominated at the front, the biggest prize of the afternoon was being decided further down the field.
Álex Palou only needed to manage his championship advantage.
And that is exactly what he did.
By finishing eighth, the Spaniard secured his fifth IndyCar championship — his fourth consecutive title — closing another remarkable season of consistency.
McLaughlin turns Laguna Seca into a masterclass in control
Laguna Seca rarely provides easy overtaking opportunities. The 3.6-kilometer circuit, famous for its elevation changes and the iconic Corkscrew, demands precision and punishes mistakes.
McLaughlin made almost none.
After starting from pole, the Penske driver held the lead at the start and gradually established control over the race while managing his pace. His pit stops came within the expected strategic windows, allowing him to maintain the lead for virtually the entire afternoon.
The only caution of the race came after contact involving Sting Ray Robb and Dennis Hauger. Even after the restart, McLaughlin quickly regained control and went on to take the checkered flag.
It was his eighth IndyCar victory and, more importantly, a dominant way to end a wait that had lasted nearly two years.
Kyle Kirkwood finished second and secured the best championship result of his career with the runner-up position. The Andretti driver delivered a consistent performance and took advantage of mistakes from his closest rivals in the fight for second in the standings.
Christian Lundgaard started only 10th after receiving a penalty related to component changes, but delivered a strong recovery drive to finish sixth. The result was enough to secure third place in the championship for the Dane, just ten points behind Kirkwood.
Pato O’Ward finished 10th in the race and ended the season fourth in the championship.
Alexander Rossi completed the podium in third, securing his only top-three finish of the 2026 season. For the Ed Carpenter Racing driver, it was an important result after a difficult year.
Felix Rosenqvist, the 2026 Indianapolis 500 winner, finished fourth.
Palou: another championship, another piece of history
If McLaughlin had plenty to celebrate at Laguna Seca, Álex Palou had even more reason to smile.
The Spaniard did not need to win.
He did not even need to take unnecessary risks.
With the championship advantage he had built throughout the season, Palou arrived at the final round knowing that his main objective was simply to bring the car home and secure the title.
That is exactly what happened.
His eighth-place finish gave Palou his fifth IndyCar championship. He finished the season with 631 points, compared with 545 for Kyle Kirkwood, giving him an 86-point advantage.
More impressive than the margin was Palou’s consistency throughout the year.
He won six races in 2026 — St. Petersburg, Birmingham, Long Beach, Detroit, Nashville and Portland — once again showing an extraordinary ability to turn almost every race weekend into a strong points haul.
At 29 years old, Palou has already built a résumé that places him among the greats in IndyCar history. His fifth championship only strengthens that argument, especially after winning four consecutive titles.
The question now is no longer simply how many championships Palou can win.
It is how far this dominance can go.
Kirkwood takes another step toward the top
Kyle Kirkwood’s runner-up finish deserves just as much attention.
The Andretti driver finished the season ahead of several names who entered the final round with greater expectations, confirming that he is no longer simply one of the promising drivers of the new generation.
Second in the championship is the best result of Kirkwood’s IndyCar career and could become a major turning point.
The gap to Palou remained significant, but Kirkwood finished 2026 as the Spaniard’s closest challenger.
If he can turn that consistency into more victories and stronger weekends across an entire season, the American could become one of the most important contenders for the championship in the years ahead.
A farewell bigger than the result
Amid the championship battle, Laguna Seca also delivered one of the most emotional moments of the weekend.
Scott Dixon contested his final race with Chip Ganassi Racing, bringing an end to a partnership that lasted 25 seasons and became one of the most successful relationships in motorsport history.
Together, Dixon and Ganassi achieved 58 victories, six IndyCar championships and an Indianapolis 500 victory.
His 17th-place finish at Laguna Seca does little to reflect the significance of the moment.
Dixon built his career around consistency, longevity and an almost unmatched ability to remain competitive through different generations of cars, teams and rivals.
His departure from Chip Ganassi Racing marks the end of an era.
There is still a possibility that Dixon could continue racing in 2027, but his future remains uncertain. For fans, the hope is simple: that Laguna Seca was not the last time we saw the New Zealander behind the wheel of an IndyCar.
Laguna Seca by the numbers
The final round had a surprisingly calm character for such a competitive season.
There was just one caution during the race, caused by contact between Sting Ray Robb and Dennis Hauger. It was also the only incident that resulted in a retirement.
Twenty-two of the 25 cars finished on the lead lap, reinforcing the impression of a race decided primarily by pace and strategy rather than a series of incidents.
Despite his crash, Hauger still left Monterey with an important achievement: the Norwegian was confirmed as the 2026 Rookie of the Year.
What does 2026 leave behind?
The season may be over, but IndyCar is already entering a new era.
Dixon’s departure from Chip Ganassi Racing changes one of the most established structures on the grid. Penske ended the season with a victory, but some of its leading drivers experienced campaigns below the level of dominance expected from the organization.
At the same time, Kyle Kirkwood firmly established himself among the leading drivers of the new generation.
And above all of them, Álex Palou finished the year on top once again.
The Spaniard turned consistency into dominance, victories into championships and regularity into a historic run of four consecutive titles.
Now IndyCar faces the challenge of finding someone capable of stopping that streak.
Because after 2026, the question is no longer whether Palou belongs among the elite of IndyCar.
He does.
The real question is who can finally knock him off the top.
